Response of Total Column Ozone at High Latitudes to Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

چکیده
The total column ozone (TCO) at northern high latitudes is increased over a course of 1–2 months after major sudden stratospheric warming as consequence enhanced eddy transport and diffusive fluxes. We analyzed ground-based measurements TCO from Oslo, Andøya Ny Ålesund 2000 to 2020. During this time interval, 15 warmings (SSWs) occurred. observed variations are in good agreement with those ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5), showing that ERA5 reliable, even during dynamically active periods. has the advantage it no data gaps polar night. found was by up 190 DU SSW February 2010, one month. composite analysis SSWs provided result on average about 50 month central date SSW.

The 2010 Antarctic ozone hole: Observed reduction in ozone destruction by minor sudden stratospheric warmings
Satellite observations show that the 2010 Antarctic ozone hole is characterized by anomalously small amounts of photochemical ozone destruction (40-60% less than the 2005-2009 average). Observations from the MLS instrument show that this is mainly related to reduced photochemical ozone destruction between 20-25 km altitude. Lower down between 15-20 km the atmospheric chemical composition and ph...
متن کاملCalculation of total column ozone from global UV spectra at high latitudes
[1] A new algorithm to retrieve total column ozone from global spectral UV irradiance measurements is presented, and its accuracy is assessed. The expanded uncertainty (coverage factor 2) of the resulting ozone values varies between 2% and 3.5% for solar zenith angles (SZA) smaller than 75 and clear skies. For larger SZA the uncertainty becomes dominated by the sensitivity of the method to the ...
متن کاملSudden Stratospheric Warmings as Noise-Induced Transitions
Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are usually considered to be initiated by planetary wave activity. Here it is asked whether small-scale variability (e.g., related to gravity waves) can lead to SSWs given a certain amount of planetary wave activity that is by itself not sufficient to cause a SSW. A highly vertically truncated version of the Holton–Mass model of stratospheric wave–mean flow ...
متن کاملZonal-Mean Dynamics of Extended Recoveries from Stratospheric Sudden Warmings
The recovery of theArctic polar vortex following stratospheric suddenwarmings is found to take upward of 3 months in a particular subset of cases, termed here polar-night jet oscillation (PJO) events. The anomalous zonal-mean circulation above the pole during this recovery is characterized by a persistently warm lower stratosphere, and above this a cold midstratosphere and anomalously high stra...
متن کاملThe Life Cycle of the Northern Hemisphere Sudden Stratospheric Warmings
Motivated by recent evidence of strong stratospheric–tropospheric coupling during the Northern Hemisphere winter, this study examines the evolution of the atmospheric flow and wave fluxes at levels throughout the stratosphere and troposphere during the composite life cycle of a sudden stratospheric warming. The composite comprises 39 major and minor warming events using 44 years of NCEP–NCAR re...
